Nigeria government to put speed cameras on the roads

Nigeria government is set to introduce speed cameras on the roads across its borders to assist the Federal Road Safety Commission (FRSC) curtail excessive speeding by motorists and improve safe use of the roads, according to a report by This Day.

Nigerian Minister of Power, Works and Housing, Mr. Babatunde Fashola said in a statement that most accidents in the country were not caused by a failed road network but by irresponsible use of the road by the drivers, with a large percent of the drivers not qualified for the road.

“I think that it is fair to say that not many people who manage vehicles on our roads are actually trained to manage vehicles on the roads; many people are auxiliary drivers for want of something better to do. There are rules in the operation and utilisation of automobiles,” said Fashola.

The Minister further noted that the ministry will advocate for retraining of drivers. He further added that the ministry is introducing the speed cameras to discourage drivers from excessive driving in addition to the education, enlightenment and speed limit devices that the FRSC is currently using in addressing the problem.
