Government to appoint a chief technology officer

The government is going to appoint a chief technology officer to help drive a new digital agenda for New Zealand.

New research shows 14 to 17-year-olds have a "better handle" on the issue than those who are slightly older.

Communications Minister Clare Curran says the role will involve preparing and overseeing a national digital road map for the next five to 10 years.

“We need to respond to the opportunities and challenges for our changing digital world,” she said.

“This position is critical to ensuring we can use and develop digital technologies for social prosperity, economic productivity, and for the good of all New Zealanders.”

Ms Curran says the government intends making ICT the second largest contributor to GDP by 2025.

She’s seeking applications for the new position, the deadline is January 15.
