INTRODUCTION

Analysis of network elements or system behavior during the network trial phase does not always require large or expensive testing systems. For many teams, often the need is simply for an easy-to-use tool that has the capabilities for real-time and offline testing of the latest multitechnology network. SoftHawk is the ideal solution for network equipment functional testing, system testing and customer support teams.

WHERE TO USE SoftHawk

SoftHawk from EXFO is a software-only protocol analyzer that can be installed on any PC running on Windows XP or Windows 7 operating system. It is an ideal solution for:

  • Detailed analysis
  • Functional testing
  • System verification
  • Site troubleshooting
  • LTE trial verification with additional iPro capture unit including user-plane analysis

SoftHawk is based on the M5 Analyzer platform. It allows real-time analysis of Ethernet-based interfaces in GERAN, UTRAN, LTE, PS and CS core, as well as IMS and legacy core. All wireless technologies are supported in offline analysis. With a Windows-style graphical user interface (GUI) and automated configuration, SoftHawk is quick and easy to set up for analysis. Network traffic analysis is illustrated by clear graphics, and issues to be addressed are visibly highlighted. You can easily bring the latest functionalities to SoftHawk via a software update downloaded directly from Internet—all you need is a valid EXFO Care to always keep your tool up-to-date.

SoftHawk—FLEXIBLE AND SCALEABLE

All of the Ethernet-based interfaces can be analyzed with the PC’s NIC-adapter. When offline, SoftHawk can handle and analyze trace files recorded from any transmission technology.

Equipped with a separate iPro capture appliance, SoftHawk becomes a powerful LTE packet user-plane analyzer that is capable of capturing data from 1 or 10 Gbit Ethernet interfaces at 100% line rate and perform correlated control and user-plane analysis. SoftHawk may be scaled up to the BrixHawk Distributed Analyzer to cover wider LTE network troubleshooting and statistical analysis.

A unique use case for SoftHawk is that it enables real-time analysis without any probes. For example, in Nokia Siemens Networks (NSN) environments, SoftHawk can make a connection directly to the eNodeB for complete LTE monitoring (S1/LTE air interfaces, X2 interfaces) or to packet-switched and circuit-switched core network elements (i.e., MSC server, SC-MGW, SGSN and GGSN) and used to troubleshoot live networks.

Software Applications

  • Diagnostics Suite: Statistics and user-plane analysis for network diagnosis of QoE; see signaling KPIs, full xDRs, subscriber and application-level QoS, IP and user-plane analysis with DPI
  • Call and session analyzer: Call and session tracing and analysis for troubleshooting; see how individual calls or sessions evolve over multiple interfaces with phase information
  • Protocol Monitor: Detailed decoding for root-cause analysis; see how the elements communicate with each other and the sequence of messages, as well as the full decoding details
